Product Selection Guidance

Before choosing alarm-related products, check the alarm system model, installation type, wiring requirements, power requirements and how each product will connect to the system.

Some items, such as relays, sirens, power supplies, batteries and cable types, must be selected carefully to suit the alarm panel and installation method.

Some relay contacts may be rated for 240V switching, but any 240V electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Always check the relay rating and use a suitable switching method for the application.

Outputs & Relays

Outputs and relays may be used to trigger suitable devices, such as garage motor inputs, gate motor inputs, warning devices, door release circuits or other control circuits.

Check the output type, relay voltage, contact rating and wiring requirements before selecting a relay.

Power Supplies & Backup Batteries

Power supplies, backup power units and batteries may be used to power panels, sirens, expanders, relays, electric locks and other suitable low-voltage devices.

Check the voltage, current rating, battery size and enclosure requirements before selecting a power supply or battery.

Hardwired Sirens

Hardwired sirens create a loud warning sound when the system is triggered.

A system may use an indoor siren, outdoor siren, or multiple sirens for larger sites or separate areas.

Additional power may be required when using multiple sirens. Check the output capacity, siren current draw, power supply requirements and wiring method.

Standard Security Cables

Select the cable type and length required for your installation. Longer runs / commercial alarm projects: 14/0.20 cable is recommended.

Common use examples:
Detectors and keypads: 4-core cable
Internal sirens, electric locks, gate or garage motor trigger: Fig. 8 or 4-core cable
External sirens: normally 6-core cable, or 4-core plus Fig. 8 cable

Screened Security Cables

Screened security cables may be used where extra protection against electrical noise or interference is required.
They are often considered for longer runs, commercial sites, electrically noisy environments, or where recommended by the manufacturer, designer or installer.

Premade Network Cables

Premade network cables may be used to connect cameras, NVRs, alarm panels, intercoms, access control equipment, switches, routers or other network devices.

Choose the cable length based on device location and network layout.

Bulk Network Cables & Joiners

Bulk network cables and joiners may be used for the same types of network connections as premade cables, but they need to be cut, run and terminated to suit the installation.

Choose based on cable distance, installation pathway and network layout.

Wireless Access Points & Point-to-Point Bridges

Wireless access points and point-to-point bridge kits may be used where a network connection is required but running a network cable is difficult or not practical.

They may be used to connect compatible network devices, such as cameras, NVRs, alarm panels, intercoms, access control equipment or other devices that require a network connection.

Selection depends on the device location, distance, line of sight, power availability and site conditions.
